Document Summary
Chapter 2: the brain: an o(cid:448)er(cid:448)ie(cid:449) of structure and function. Midbrain: many structures are involved in relaying information between other brain regions; other structures help keep us awake and alert when we need to respond to threatening situations. Hypothalamus: controls pituitary gland by releasing hormones; also controls homeostatic behaviours. Amygdala: modulates the strength of emotional memories and involved in emotional learning. Cerebrum: cerebral cortex: caries information between the cortex and the thalamus or. Frontal lobe subdivided into the motor & premotor cortex, & the prefrontal cortex (involved in executive functioning) between different parts of the cortex. Originated with franz gall who believed in faculty psychology: the theory that different mental abilities were independent and autonomous functions, carried out in different parts of the brain. Gall"s work resulted in the invention of phrenology: discredited idea that psychological strengths and weaknesses could be correlated with the relative size of different brain areas.
