Document Summary

Meanings of basic values for women and men: a cross cultural analysis. Determining if men and women attribute the same meaning to basic values that guide and justify their actions/evaluations, if they construe these values in a similar way. Meaning of a value can be inferred from its pattern of positive and negative association with other values, part of our basic worldview. Most prominent value relevant dimensions women and men presumably differ are communal (nurturing, yielding) and expressive vs. agentic (instrumental, assertive) and task orientations. Values affect a wide spectrum of behaviour across many situations. Most concerned gender differences and the relative importance attributed to values, mostly work values, and health, morality and family. Comparisons of value importance implicitly assume that the values compared have equivalent meanings. Their research is asking whether gender linked differences in value meaning appear consistently across cultures, vary across cultures or samples, or not appear at all.
