Conformity- a change in behaviour or belief to accord with others. Western cultures give conformity a negative label (submission/compliance) rather than positive ones (communal sensitivity/cooperative team play) In japan, going along with others is a sign of tolerance, self-control, and maturity. We choose labels to suit our values and judgments. Varieties of conformiy: compliance conformity that involves publicly acting in accord with social pressure while privately disagreeing, obediance acting in accord with a direct order, acceptance conformity that involves both acting and believing in accord with social pressure. Studies: pinpoint of the wall experiment people"s guesses of how far it moved got closer and closer, autokinetic phenomenon- (self motion) the apparent movement of a stationary point of light in the dark. If experiment held at yale, obedience higher than if held at lesser institution. Liberating effect: feel justifiably angry, when others object you feel free to object as well.
