Dualism: mind and body are separate and body is physical while mind is not. (old belief) Monism: everything consists of matter including the mind and body. The workings of the nervous system produce the mind. (new belief) Two systems of vision: mammalian one and the primitive one for sudden movements. Damage to the mammalian visual system of the brain. People who are blind or partially blind can reach for objects that are not in their field of vision. Shows that damage to mammalian visual system leads to people using the primitive visual system to guide their hands. Shows that consciousness is not a general property of all parts of the brain. Visual info can control behaviour without producing a conscious sensation. The corpus callosum is cut so exchange between the right and left hemisphere of the brain is halted. Shows that if information does not reach the verbal parts of the brain then it does not reach consciousness.
