Experimental ablation experimental ablation: the removal or distortion of a portion of the brain of a lab animal; presumably, the functions that can no longer be performed are the ones the region previously controlled. Synonym for experimental ablation. excitotoxic lesion: a brain lesion produced by intracerebral injection of an excitatory amino acid, such as kianic acid. Kainic acid: kills neurons by stimulating them to death. Operate on a group of animals and produce sham lesions. Anesthetize each animal, put in the stereotaxic apparatus (described below), cut open the scalp, drill the holes, insert the electrode or cannula, and lower it to the proper depth. Do everything you would to produce the lesion except turn on the lesion maker. Stereotaxic surgery: stereotaxic surgery: brain surgery using a stereotaxic apparatus to position an electrode or cannula in a specified position of the brain. Stereotaxis means solid arrangement - the ability to locate objects in space.
