People base their actions on the interpretation of reality that their perceptual system provides, rather than the reality itself. Experience is a characteristics that influences the perceiver"s impression of a target. Past experiences lead the perceiver to develop expectations in which they affect current perceptions. Needs unconsciously influence our perceptions by causing us to perceive what we wish to perceive o. Perceivers who have been deprived of food will tend to see more edible things in ambiguous pictures than will well-fed observers. Lonely university students might misperceive the most innocent actions of members of the opposite sex as indicating interest in them. Emotions (example: anger, happiness or fear) influences our perceptions. Perceptual defence: tendency for the perceptual system to defend the perceiver against unpleasant emotions.
