REC100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Parks Canada, Banff National Park, Outdoor Recreation
Document Summary
Can be a number of different activities/experiences that take place. Outdoor activities may not necessarily be focused on nature itself: ex. wilderness canoeing has nature as more of a primary focus, whereas atv riding requires outdoors, but doesn"t have nature as a primary focus. Nature-based: backpacking, canoe tripping, berry picking: requires little facilities. Nature-oriented: focused more on the experience of nature. User-oriented: focused more on the experience of the activity: ex. going mountain biking to socialize in nature with friends. Consumptive activities: physical elements of the natural world are collected (game, fish, fossils, berries, etc. ) Non-consumptive activities: activities in which nothing is physically taken from nature (hiking, whale watching, etc. ) When classifying nature based recreation, it depends more on the motives behind the activities rather than the activities themselves. Lists of activities focus on rates or frequencies of participation, not preference: this may mask constraints that limit participation.
