Issues of interest, preferences, participation, enjoyment, motivations, social relations, spatial geography of origins: constraints. Influence recreation preferences and participation: leisure enjoyment, negotiation of constraints, some people try to alleviate or overcome the influence of constraints, people participate in a way that differs from what would have happened without the constraings. The purpose and value of leisure constraints research. Investigate factors that are assumed by researchers or perceived or experienced by individuals to limit the formation of leisure preferences or limit participation and enjoyment in leisure. Innovative interpretation of new and more complex empirical research: emergence of a series of theoretical, model-based articles that challenged the previous assumptions and set the stage for future sophisticated empirical research. Increase in new empirical research activity coupled with a growing awareness among leisure scholars of the importance of constraings: beyond the participation model, antecedent constraints: limited factors thought to shape the development of interest and preferences.
