Functionalism: functionalists view mass media as providing a unique and powerful ability to promote common values and beliefs, 4 main areas in which mass media contribute to society, socialization function. Achieved as they send values, beliefs, and traditions from one generation to the next. By reinforcing certain messages, mass media effectively promotes social integration and the formation of a common cultural identity. Often ignore the voice of minority groups: surveillance function. Need for society to have a mechanism in place that gathers info for the population and that allows members of society to focus on their own activities and interests. This was fulfilled by mass media (tv, radio) but people are not referring to other media (blogs, amateur podcasts) to get news and info: correlation function. Occurs when mass media present difficult and complex issues in a way that most people can understand. Necessary because of volume of newsworthy events and to present stories to maintain audience interest.
