The treatment of hostages in prison riots: some hypotheses. The behaviour of inmates towards guards and undesirables can be explained in reference to: 1. Guards are overpowered and them immobilized by being locked in prison cells: some inmates take it upon themselves or are appointed by riot leaders to protect the hostages from other inmate. Inmates may threaten to kill or harm hostages, unless their demands are met or if the authorities attempt to storm the prison, but these threats are rarely carried out. Hostages are more likely to lose their lives to the agents sent to forcefully preserve them: ex. The following hypotheses attempt to answer these questions: moral prohibitions. Killing another person in any society is never carelessly condemned nor all types of killing judged equally reprehensible: ex. killing in time of war or for the purpose of self-defence is considered justified.
