Factors that contributes to variations in leader effectiveness is communication style. Leadership communication style is relatively enduring set of communicative behaviours in which a leader engages when interacting with followers. Communication style a leader selects contributes to the success or failure of any attempt to exert influence. Three leadership styles: authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire. Maintains strict control over followers by directly regulating policy, procedures, and behaviour. Create distance between themselves and their followers as means of emphasizing role distinctions. Believes that followers would not function effectively without direct supervision, people left to complete work on their own will be unproductive. Engage in supportive communication that facilitates interaction between leaders and followers. Encourages follower involvement and participation in determination of goals and procedures. Assumes that followers are capable of making informed decisions. Form of leader communication that has been called nonleadership by some. Ineffective version of this leadership would be when leader withdraws from followers and offers little guidance/support.
