Atoms consist of protons (+) and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons (-) in orbit. Atomic mass : number of protons (+) + number of neutrons. Isotopes : atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but di erent masses due to di erence in number of neutrons. Compressibility: ability of matter to be deformed (compress or expand) upon action of a force. Only gases are very compressible whereas liquids and solids are not very compressible. Crystal lattice from when molecules align in a lattice. Changes with change in temperature and change in chemical structure. Less dense materials oat on top of more dense materials. A force that attracts matter to each other. Objects of mass m near the earths surface are pulled with force g = 9. 8 m/s2. Potential energy: the work needed to raise an object of mass m through vertical distance h through the force of gravity.
