By the end of this class, you should be able to: Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative ways of measuring behaviour. Qualitative test focused theories/ hypotheses, always made in advance collect data from studies analyze data with statistics research method: case studies, naturalistic observation. Ideal sample: large and representative of population test less focused hypotheses, rarely made in advance (if there, it"s exploratory) collect unfiltered data describe data without statistics. Research method : experiments, correlational, longitudinal, quasi, systematic observation. Ideal sample: chosen for purpose (e. g. a particular perspective);tend to be small; use only a few individuals. Goal: describe behaviour of particular groups in particular situations. *content analysis of archives: theme (qualitative) vs systematic coding (quantitaive) Systematic observation : counting frequency of certain behavior. Quantitative data is not necessarily object (ex: rating scales) Types of observational methods: naturalistic observation, systematic observation, archival research, case studies. Researcher immersed in a natural setting (i. e. , the field ) to collect information over time.
