Chapter 12 civil society, interest groups, and the media. Civil society is an ambiguous term subject to a wide variety of interpretations. Framework within which those without political authority live their lives. Coined in the 18th century, but saw a revival in the late 1980s and early. Examples: philippines (1986), south korea (1987), an end to communism in eastern europe by 1991. It acquired a heroic aura because of its association with the protests that brought down the communist regimes of eastern europe. Civil societies promise of an alternative, more consensual, non-coercive democratic politics. Scholars began looking for similar groups in other states. Ngos began to step into roles where states were failing. However, authoritarian states began to set up ngos of their own to bolster support. Some states blocked foreign aid to ngos operating in their sovereign space. Academic attention refocused on informal social politics. Attracted much interest from students of middle eastern politics .
