Document Summary
Developmental psychology the study of continuity and change across the life span. The prenatal stage of development ends with birth and begins 9 months earlier. If the zygote successfully implants itself in the uterine wall, it earns the right to be called an embryo. The embryonic stage a period of prenatal development that lasts from the second week until about the eighth week: embryo comminutes to divide and its cells begin to differentiate. At around 9 weeks, the embryo gets a new name: fetus. Prevents leakage of neural signals that travel along the axon. Humans have underdeveloped brains when born because their small head allows them to pass through mother birth canal: also lets us adapt to environment. The placenta is the organ that physically links the bloodstream of the mother and the embryo or fetus and permits exchange of certain chemicals. Children have variety of abnormalities and cognitive deficits: tobacco is another common teratogen.
