2 components: physical: this involves direct material or bodily change, psychological: how an individual perceives circumstances in their lives. Stressor - physically or psychologically challenging events or circumstances. Strain - physiological or psychological response to a stressor. Transactions - continuous interactions and adjustments with the person and environment each a ecting and being a ected by the other. When interactions between person and the environment lead the person to perceive a discrepancy between their resources and demands. Cognitive appraisal: mental process in which people asses 2 factors: whether demand threatens their physical or physiological well-being, whether the resources are available for meeting a demand. These demands are called primary and secondary appraisal. Assessing situation for our well-being ( will i be okay, what does this mean to me ) Primary appraisal can yield 1/3 judgement: it"s irrelevant, it"s good, it"s stressful. Appraisals can in uence stress even when they are not directly impacting us.
