Reflected appraisals: other people"s appraisals in uence our self-concept. Appraisals = what other people think about us. They judge and tell you where you t (funny, helpful, nice etc: looking-glass self. People come to know themselves rst by observing how others view them, or others" appraisals of them, and then incorporating those appraisals into their self-concept. They tell us about our attributes, and evaluate our actions; tell you things about you, but also judging thru words and body language. The words people use to refer to us. Their facial expressions and body language: subliminal exposure to scowling (disapproving faces) can in uence self-evaluations, can be in uenced by the generalized other. A mental representation of how ones perceives the average person would evaluate them: but our views of ourselves can often be quite different than that of others, the looking-glass self is based on re ected appraisals.
