Public sociology was a term introduced by herbert gans in 1989 with elected president of the america sociological association. It is an approach to sociology that tries to involve the community beyond the academic discipline in public discussions about the nature of society. Another sociologist, micheal burawoy felt very strongly about this and called upon fellow sociologists to return to its roots through public sociology. He believed there are 4 types of sociological knowledge. Multiple intersecting research programs, each with own assumption, questions, and theories. Done in the service of a goal set by a client. Ie. serving as an expert witness on a case.
