ANT101H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Mate Choice, Anthropocentrism
Document Summary
Behaviour= response of individuals, groups or species to its environment. Behaviours are adaptations to environmental circumstances --- behavioural patterns are innate. Product of complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Body size-> large animal= smaller sa(relative to body mass)= less heat lost= more heat retained. Basal metabolic rate (bmr)->small animal= bigger metabolic rate = high energy foods. Diet-> evolution of elongated intestines, intestinal bacteria duplicated gene ( there for larger primates don"t need to focus on high energy foods) Distribution of resources-> various foods distributed different ways, large groups break into subunits to hunt for food. Predation-> response to predators depend on size, social structure, type of predator, bigger predation pressure, but small body size, large communities= : ) Dispersal-> if basic social structure is a pair, offspring leave or forced to leave ( so they find mates outside natal group= no inbreeding) Human activities-> impacted by human hunting + forest clearing.
