Rockshelters have been located along the western escarpment of the northern. Cumberland plateau: gathering of hickory nuts, acorns, chestnuts and walnuts. Indicates holocene climate changes, plant movements, wilfire regimes and human activities. Receives pollen mainly from vegetation growing on a local ridgetop. Steep cliffs, side slopes and benches following upper escarpment o. 1% of fires over 51 years were sparked by lightning. At cliff palace pond, forest dominated by northern red oak, post oak, chestnut oak, white oak, etc. Cliff palace cave is 60 m west of the pond. Middle archaic big sandy and stanly stemmed bifaces. Used 95 absolute dates to characterize temporal patterns of prehistoric human occupation. Nutshells of acorns, hickories, black walnut, butternut and chestnut abundant. 32 stratigraphic levels (seen on figure 6 in article) Early holocene, forests surrounfing cliff palace pond were cool- temperate to boreal trees (includes spruce) Northern white cedar would favor seasonal climate of the early holocene.
