Document Summary

Also called the electromagnetic wave theory of light. light is a type of em energy and has wave properties. Light from the sun is made up of all forms of em radiations (spectrum) from very short wavelength (gamma) to ordinary visible light to very long wavelength radio waves. 8 m/s where is the wavelength of light. = the frequency of light c = the speed of light. Frequency (or wavelength) determines the type of radiation. When light or em radiation is projected on a metal, electrons are liberated from the metal surface and a small current is recorded in the circuit. This e ect is used in solar cells and x ray imaging. According to the classical theory the brighter the light, the greater the energy of the electrons ejected. However the frequency/energy of light rather than brightness was found to be controlling the energy of the electron produced. Max planck (1900) hypothesized that energy (light) is not continuous.
