It may be necessary to be more critically aware of and engaged with the changes and consequences of the continued evolution of new media. The environmental cost of new media is certain to be an important personal, policy and corporate issue in the years to come. Three-screen activity (using phone, watching television and surfing the web simultaneously) suggests that there is a modification underway, not just in the amount of television being consumed but also in the way it is being consumed. It would appear that canadians, too, are participating in the cognitive surplus generated by declining television viewing. The internet continues to evolve as a dense, ubiquitous global, socio-technical network. New media is now clearly embedded in global media culture to the extent that people now like in a network society. This has a range of: rather than industrial production. Economic - new media is linked to the shift toward a global knowledge economy.
