In this chapter, we explore the mobile phone and related technologies, such as the tablet computer and netbook, from a historical, technological, and economic basis. Marconi decided that it was a good idea if ships had a radio communication system because they were constantly carrying valuables (people and goods). He also agreed that ship owners would buy the radio communication system because it would be useful for long and short trips. This proved he was right after the titanic hit an iceberg, the radio operate was able to call for help. Size and expense remained problems, so the initial portable radio system where built into vehicles, by the time the second world war, a hand-held two- way radio-the walkie-talkie-was on the market. This type of radio had a significant disadvantage for business users, however: it was severely constrained by limited capacity in the system and it was unreliable for calls that went beyond the local area.
