New media enables many things for our society, our communities, and for us as individuals. These capabilities arise in many ways because new media are based on digital electronic technologies and are arranged to systems and facilitate easy exchange and share of bits. As various commentators have noticed, surveillance is deeply connected to the existence and viability of the modern state, and modernity itself. We simply could not exist in the modern world (or postmodern world, for that matter) without surveillance. Using surveillance to ensure the smooth operation of a modern economy seems like a good thing, and often it is. But surveillance is not always benign or confined to accepted industry uses. After the 9/11, policing has taken on a profoundly technological aspect, with vast array of scanners, cameras, databases, and sensors deployed at borders, airports, and around cities.
