It is critical that we understand how to read and critique numbers, in order to pursue informed dialogue and thoughtful action. Within a cultural context that privileges science as a form of knowing, numbers are seen as superior representation in comparison to other symbolic codes. Numerical literacy, ability to critique and make thoughtful decisions while interpreting numbers. This engages a language, with vocabulary and grammatical structures that serve as general rules within a research game. The rules shift over context and over time, need to be understood in order to engage in critique. Counting number of people evacuate from an area due to a hurricane: This number hold instrumental value, allowing organizations to plan resources to assist hurricane victims. It also holds symbolic value, signifying a group experiencing devastating trauma.
