An individual"s unique collection of consistent behavioural traits: consistency: stability in behaviour across situation lies at the core of personality, distinctiveness: behavioural differences among people reacting to the same situation are core to personality. A durable disposition to behave a certain way in a variety of situations. Most approaches to personality assume there are basic traits, where a small number of fundamental traits determine other superficial ones. For example, being impulsive & irritable may come from being excitable. Psychologists have tried to identify the basic traits. Raymond cattell used factor analysis to reduce a huge list of personality traits compiled by gordon allport to 16 basic dimensions of personality. Robert mccrae & paul costa used factor analysis to get a simpler 5-factor model of personality.
