Development: the sequence of age-related changes that occur as a person progresses from conception to death. Life span: prenatal period: extends from conception to birth, usual encompassing nine months of pregnancy. Grows rapidly (much quicker than growth outside of womb) The course of prenatal development: germinal stage: the first phase of prenatal development, encompassing the first two weeks of conception. Fertilization, rapid cell division, zygote implants in uterine wall. Most bodily systems begin to form (heart, spine, brain) Arms, legs, hands, feet, fingers, toes, eyes and ears are discernible. Most birth defects result from problems in this stage: fetal stage: third stage, lasting from two months until birth. The age of viability: the age at which a baby can survive in the event of a premature birth (22 weeks-26 weeks) Teratogens: are any external agents, such as drugs or viruses, that can harm an embryo or fetus.
