Document Summary
Deviance: departure from a norm that evokes a negative reaction from others. Crime: deviance that against the law. Law: a norm stipulated and enforced by government bodies. Some people who committed crimes in the 1940"s weren"t seen as deviants, whereas if people were to do the same things now, they"d be not only deviants but criminals too. Formal punishment: penalization from the judicial system for breaking the law, eg: paying a fine, prison time, etc. Informal punishment: a mild sanction that is imposed during face-to-face interaction rather than by the judicial system, eg: a frown, harsh stare, gossip, etc. One important thing to note about crime is that a lot of it is not reported to the police. Note: committing an act in violation of the law does not automatically make you a criminal. To be identified as a criminal, one"s law-violating behaviour must be observed and felt to justify action.
