Difference between crime and deviance: deviance involved breaking a norm and evoking a negative reaction from others, crime is deviance that is against the law, law norm that is stipulated and enforced by government bodies. Sanctions: sanctions are actions indicating disapproval, formal punishment results from people breaking law. Ex. criminal formally punished by having to spend time in prison, pay fine, etc. Informal punishment is mild may involve raised eyebrows, a harsh stare, gossip, ostracism, etc: stigmatization process of negatively evaluating people because of a marker that distinguishes them from others. Some crimes more common than others and at higher rates among different social groups. Collecting statistics on crime shows that much crime is not reported to the police: victimless crimes violations of law in which no victim, has stepped forward and been identified.
