Content and intensity of religious belief, and the form and frequency of religious practices, are influenced by the structure of society and a person"s place in it. Scope of religious authority has governs fewer apsects of life than it used to be. A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, things set apart and forbidden beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community all those who adhere to them. Collective conscience: when people live together, they come to share common sentiments and values. Cause us to distinguish the secular everyday world (profane) from the religious, transcendent world (sacred) Designate certain objects as symbolizing the sacred (totems) Rituals: set practices designed to connect people to the sacred. Effects of rituals and of religion as a whole is to reinforce social solidarity. Overemphasizes religion"s role in maintaining social cohesion. Ignores the fact that when religion does social cohesion, it often reinforces social inequality.
