Document Summary

Racialization = imputing racial characteristics on a group. Ethnicity: perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant. Ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors etc. Prejudice: attitude that judges a person on his/her group"s real or imagined characteristics. Discrimination: unfair treatment of people because of their group. Racism: belief that a visible characteristic of a group indicates group inferiority and justifies discrimination. Racial mixing is causing race as a biological category to loose nearly all meaning. : allows social inequality (english who colonized ireland, americans colonized africans by slaves, Germans to jews = systems of racial domination) Stereotypes embed themselves into popular lore and reinforce racial inequalities. Race is to biology as ethnicity is to culture. What matters in determining ethnic/racial success is resources they have and the structure of opportunities for economic advancement. Racial and ethnic inequality is rooted in social structure not biology and culture.
