Emile durkheim: religion culture as a social product. People can be sorted in many ways. Mechanical solidarity: people join together of their similar. The shared beliefs and understandings of a people constituted. Change came when societies grew in size and density lives their collective consciousness and practices people began to specialize. Collective representation: express collective reality, humans cannot conceive of time and space independent, people posses an individual biological component and a of socially agreed-upon divisions shared social component. Distinction : the sacred and the profane social and nature beings, scared/profane distinction organizes and classifies all, emerges in its most elementary form in the totemic, sensation of divinity in human beings through religions of tribal people. Its power or control over us, shown in its ability to cause or inhibit our actions without regard for individual utility. Its positiive force, the strengthening and vivifying action of society : sacred: reality associated with the force, profane:i reality associated with the everyday.
