Document Summary

Agriculture remade the world physically and culturally. Food is a signifier of who we are, where we came from, and what we want to be. Food studies are gendered: what women vs men eat, and what food is seen as feminine vs. masculine, women often portrayed as lacking many positive connections to food (eating disorders) The feminist utopian dream: women having more free time because they don"t have to prepare meals for the family. The farmer utopian dream: automated factories that prevent back-breaking work and isolation. Eating entails a host of personal, social, and even global factors that, in their entirety, add up to a complex food system . Identity: personal preference, pleasure, creativity, a sense of who you are, taste, family, ethnic background, personal memories, values and ideas. Convenience: price, availability, ease of preparation, energy, time, labour, skill, limiting factors: economics (ses), environment, social structure.
