Document Summary

Racist social media attacks at u of t highlight barriers to addressing anti-blackness. A black rst-year engineering student at the university of toronto has brought forth that they have received social media attacks. The university"s black student"s association held a meeting at town hall to highlight the occurrence, and to express that this is part of a larger systematic structure of anti-blackness. An international student from africa that was preparing to attend the university was a member of a residence"s group chat to which she received a derogatory term consisting of the n-word. She attached articles explaining why it was offensive to use this term for days following the offence, and eventually it had spiralled out of control, with several students expressing their opinions. She did come to the university, however she decided to live off-campus due to the racial slurs she had received.
