Document Summary
Behaviours are also shaped by interactions with other individuals. Communication is the transfer of information between a sender and receiver. E. g. velvet monkeys that perceive a threat to their group will send an alarm call that warns of the threat and speci es the nature of the threat, even if it is a predator. Communication evolved through co-opting and modifying behaviours used in another context: process is called ritualization and it involves: Reducing the amount of variation in the behaviour so it can be recognized immediately. Increasing its separation from the original function. Some forms of communication are complex and learned during a sensitive period. Sex difference in patterns of communication comes from intersexual selection and can extend to other traits: males birds have bright plumage and elaborate displays but females don"t. Most or all of the song is learned during a speci c, sensitive period.
