Document Summary
In nature, the pops of most spices are patchily distributed across the landscape. Local pops are usually separated from one another in space and connected occasionally by individuals that migrate between habitat patches. Some habitat areas that could support pops of a species are unoccupied. A metapopulation is a group of populations linked by immigrants. Patch a bit of a habitat that is separated from other bits by inhospitable environments that are dif cult or risky for individuals to cross. Nuthatches in one grove tree interact with each other more than with those in other trees so each group is a local population. Sometimes, migrants move from grove to grove, enabling gene ow between local populations. Metapopulation large pop made of smaller pops linked by occasional movements of individuals between them. Have to consider colonization and extinction of local pops to understand pop dynamics.
