Document Summary
Every species interacts with other species in ways that affect growth and reproduction. Associations among species form a complex web of interactions in which each species in uences the pop size and distribution of other species, whether they"re partners, enemies, or food. A population persists only in places where its members can tolerate the physical environment. Habitat occupied by a species usually contains other species and the distribution of each species re ects interactions with the others. Competition between species can happen when diff species use the same resources in the same place. Distinct species can coexist in a shared habitat only if they use diff resources, if they"re active at diff times, or if their local pops have few people so the resources aren"t limiting to survival and reproduction. Species can only persist when other species that bene t their growth or reproduction are present. The niche is a species" place in nature.
