Almost everyone in inner city neighbourhoods struggles financially and feels distant from the rest of america, but there are degrees to the alienation captured by the terms street or ghetto or decent. Social types: street family and the decent family 2 poles of value orientation these labels amount to evaluative judgments that confer status on residents. Of either type can co-exist w/i the same extended family. Decent can judge themselves to be so, while judging the street ones, while street ones often present themselves as decent and draw distinctions between them and other people: these are circumstantial behaviour based. Labels are used by inner-city residents to characterize themselves and others most residents are decent or are trying to be. At extreme of street-oriented group are those who make up the criminal element. People are causalities of the social and economic system and tend to embrace the street code.
