Roberts chapter 10
Life in prison
School:
• Benefit from gaining an education
• Sanctuary out of the prison lifestyle
• Interactions with teachers rather than just uniformed staff at the prison
• Provide freedom to an extent- pick courses
• Involved in activities outside the routine of prison
Voting rights for prisoners
• Before prisoners were not allowed to vote but they can now
Application for release
• Call on fiends, family. Community members e.g. teachers, volunteer members
who you may have worked with during you time in prison to paint a picture of
the person you really are. At this point the jury considered for parole
immediately. However this does not mean you get to leave the prison as the
jury does not have power over that- (not that easy to get released).
Apply for parole
• The parole board has to view your case and the offender has to prove that they
are not a risk to the community. In many cases it stats of with a small amount
of freedom and then gradually increases. E.g., first unescorted temporary
absence for four times over a six month period, then you may apply again and
get a whole day parole and then as you keep applying you may be granted
with a release on full parole.
Life after release from prison
• Adjusting back into the community is overwhelming
• Important for people after getting out is helping those whoa re still in prison
• To speak to the community and break down the myths and misconceptions
about the prison system. As well as giving them a better understanding of
what it is actually like. - This may reduce stigma for those who are released
from prison and are accepted warmly in the community.
• Speak to the youth at risk
• People feel trapped because of their status as a ‘ex-con’
• Stress, anxiety and fear come with the package after being released.
Evolving prison
• Harsher sentence laws affect the correctional environment
• Changes in parole results to increased time spent in prison
• Increasing waiting time for those denied parole- and of revoked it takes
two years to reapply for a parole
• Significant degree of ageing in the prison population
