Document Summary

Hippocampal formation: hippocampus: cortical structure regulating species-specific behaviours, memory, and spatial navigation, parahippocampal cortex. Papez circuit: a neural circuit, through which emotions can reach consciousness (cerebral cortex: amygdala, hippocampus, & prefrontal cortex hypothalamus, hypothalamus thalamus cingulate cortex, cingulate cortex amygdala & hippocampus, complete circuit. Functions of the limbic system: emotion bheaivours, motivated behaviours, esp. Amygdala: part of the limbic system controlling emotional & species- typical behaviours. 3 subdivisions: corticomedial area, basolateral area, central area. Amygdala neurons require more complex stimuli to be excited. Multimodal neurons: respond to multiple sensory modalities: some respond to all senses. Sends connections to hypothalamus & brainstem: influence activity associated w/ emotions & species typical behaviours. Emotional behaviours: person became fearful & anxious through stimulation, heart rate & respiration increased, felt something bad was going to happen, but don"t know what. Motivated behaviours: stimulating amygdala motivated drinking, not thirsty, though drank 2l in 20 minutes. Damage: less discriminating in food choices, & hypersexuality.
