Document Summary

Single neuron can use different transmitters at different synapses. Different transmitters can coexist in same terminal / synapse. Different transmitters can be packaged within a single vesicle. Same transmitter can have different effects on different cells. Generally simplified by concentrating on dominant transmitter in the specific axon terminal. Dominant transmitter & neuron related for function & behaviour. Cholinergic neurons: motor neurons, because acetylcholine is their main neurotransmitter: at skeletal muscles, cholinergic neurons- excitatory & produce muscular contractions. Nicotinic ach receptor (nachr): main receptor for cholinergic neurons: when ach binds opens large ion channels, allowing both na and k flow, nicotine also activates nachr. 2 complementary divisions of ans: sympathetic (speeds up, parasympathetic (slows down) Controlled by ach neurons, at different locations: sympathetic: ach neurons from the spinal cord synapse w/ Norepinephrine neurons: ach ne sympathetic response, parasympathetic: ach neurons from spinal cord synapse w/ ach neurons, ach ach parasympathetic response.
