Document Summary
Another important defining factor of psychological disorders is that they tend to be consistent over a span of time. Stealing candy or staying up all night to study for finals are deviant and dysfunctional behaviors that do not merit diagnosis of a psychological disorder. Psychological disorders are patterns of deviant and dysfunctional behaviors, thought, and feelings that cause significant distress, and may even be dangerous, mental health professionals often rely on clinical judgment (decision-making based on professional experience) when assessing psychological disorders. While there are plenty of benefits to labeling psychological disorders, there are plenty of problems as well: besides formal labels, there are lots of derogatory terms thrown around when referring to psychological disorders. Individuals with mental illness were often punished as criminals. The primary purpose of dsm-5 is to help trained mental health professionals diagnose mental disorders and develop comprehensive and effective treatment plans for these disorders. Disorder we will be focusing on: autism spectrum disorder.
