The eudaimonic approach focuses on meaning and self-realization and defines well- being in terms of the degree to which a person is fully functioning. Well-being is not the absence of mental illness. More so is it that optimal psychological functioning and experience. Interest in well-being research may be prompted by the culture of surplus. 2 main philosophies: hedonism (well-being consists of pleasure/happiness) and eudaimonism (well-being consists of realized human potential). Tend to include preferences and pleasures of the mind as well as the body. Arguments over whether measures of subjective well-being (swb) adequately explain psychological wellness. Issues concerning the hedonic perspective: one being the validity of swb and related measures as being capable of defining hedonism and/or well-being. The other issue being the types of things reported to promote well-being.
