Departmentation: assigning jobs (groups of tasks) to distinct departments (groups of employees) At organization: relatively few levels in its hierarchy of authority: larger spans on control, tend to push decision-making powers downward in the organization. Tall organization: relatively many levels in its hierarchy of authority: shorter spans of control. Formalization: the extent to which work roles are highly de ned by an organization: stems from rules, regulations & procedures that the organization chooses to implement. Preferred when an organization"s environment is more stable & it"s technology is more routine: organic structures: organizational structures characterized by atter, wider spans of control, fewer authority levels, less specialization, decentralization, & less formalization (i. e. matrix structures)
