Complex abilities are carried out by much simpler computations which are carried out by neural signals. Teleological view: accounts for an event by assuming a goal or purpose for the said event (aristotle) In 17th century descartes thought much of human cognition could be accounted for with physical mechanisms. Aristotle thought that the physical body had nothing to do with rational thought and that everything had a teleological explanation. Aristotle belived it was a part of every living thing. Descartes thought cognition was a fundamental part of perception and that our soul controlled our actions for an intended outcome. He tried using mathematics to explain everything that occurred in the world. How descartes came to the conclusion that we see shape over colour. Arbitrary relationship: ie letters and the sound we incorporate with them. Non-arbitrary: ie the direction of an arrow head directly correlates to the direction it wants you to look/move.
