Eugenics is the notion that we can design the future human species by fostering the reproduction of persons with certain traits and by discouraging the reproduction of persons without those traits. Behavioural geneticists want to nd out the percentage of variance and determine the way in which genes and the environment interact and correlate with each other. Heritability: a statistic that refers to the proportion of observed variance in a group of individuals that can be accounted for by genetic variance. Describes the degree to which genetic di erences among individuals cause di erences in an observed property. If precisely de ned, provides useful info in identifying the genetic and environmental determinants of personality. Phenotypic variance: observed individual di erences (height, weight, personality) Genotypic variance: individual di erences in the total collection of genes possessed by each person. Therefore . 5 heritability means 50% phenotypic variation is attributed to genotypic variation.
