So he got pollen from a different plant and mated the plants through cross-pollination. He chose plants that were true breeding: when self-fertilized, they pass traits without change from one generation to the next. Plants had purple flowers and white flowers. Mendel took pollen from purple flower anthers and put it in the white flowered plants. He put the pollen on the stigma of the flower (pollen receiving part of the flower) He did the same experiment but backwards putting white pollen into purple flower plants.
