Document Summary

The physical and mental health of lgb oa, fredriksen-goldsen. Based on resilience theory, this paper investigates the influence of key health indicators and risk and protective factors on health outcomes (including general health, disability, and depression) among lesbian, gay male, and bisexual (lgb) older adults. Resilience is defined as the beneficial behavioral patterns, functional competence, and cultural capacities that individuals, families, and communities utilize under adverse circumstances. Competence is conceptualized as the adaptive use of resources; adversity is considered the negative experience that can disrupt adaptive functioning. As the degrees of social support and social network size increased, the odds of poor general health decreased. Older lesbian and bisexual women were more likely to be disabled than gay and bisexual men; financial barriers to health care, smoking, and obesity increased the odds of disability although engaging in physical activities decreased the odds. As the extent of lifetime victimization and internalized stigma increased, the odds of disability also increased.
