Physics 1021 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1.4 & 1.5: Net Force
Document Summary
We can divide the motion of object in nature in two categories: translation motion, rotational motion. During translational motion of an object, any point on the object moves the same distance at the same velocity. In rotational motion, object rotate about their own axis of rotation, which does not change or move. The axis of rotation lies perpendicular to the plane. A force is defined essentially as a push or pull. If there are many forces acting on an object, then we sum up all the forces to find the net force. Therefore, net force = the sum of all forces acting on an object. Force is a vector quantity and so it has both magnitude and direction. Example: two forces f1=10n and f2=20 are acting downward on a chair. Find the magnitude of the net force acting on the chair. Explanation: we just add the two forces together because the direction of both vectors is downward.
