Document Summary

Consciousness: awareness of internal and external stimuli, broader than attention. Levels of awareness: william james, talked about stream of consciousness. It is dynamic: ever-changing and self-reflective (central to our sense of self). It is closely shaped by selective attention (which leads to unlimited possibilities). Controlled (effortful) processing: the voluntary use of attention and conscious effort. Automatic processing: activities that can be performed with little or no conscious effort. Divided attention: the ability to perform more than one activity at the same time. Components of personality (freud: id: instinctive sexual and aggressive drives, very adaptive because it allows us to survive as a race. Entirely unconscious: ego: mediating between the id and the superego, conscious and preconscious, superego: internalized morals, conscious and preconscious. The superego is located in the frontal cortex, the ego in the posterior cortex, and the id in the brainstem/limbic system. Cognitive perspective: view conscious and unconscious as complimentary forms of information processing.
